Free transport promise in World Cup bid

WORLD Cup bid chiefs have pledged to give fans free public transport on match days if England win the right to host the 2018 tournament.

The promise is one of 18 that England 2018 have made in a new document entitled Pledges to Partners.

Fans with tickets would be eligible for free public transport in cities on match days, while England 2018 are working towards making train and coach travel between cities free for supporters on those days.

n The World Cup would make a projected profit for FIFA of 161million from the local organising committee (LOC) alone.

n Journey times for FIFA executive committee members would be a maximum of 30 minutes from hotel to stadium in London, and 20 minutes elsewhere.

n England 2018 have met their one outstanding commitment from the recent FIFA inspection visit and have contracted a minimum of 60,000 hotel rooms.

Matches would be played at Leeds United’s Elland Road ground and Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough stadium if the bid was successful.

England 2018 chief executive Andy Anson said: “The Pledges to Partners highlight some new commitments we are making to FIFA and to its stakeholders and reaffirms others we have made within the detail of our bid.”
