French Market to launch series of events

A SERIES of specialist markets and events in Kirklees gets under way this week with a French Market in Huddersfield town centre.

The market, in New Street from Thursday to Sunday, will offer a variety of authentic produce and is one of a number of specialist markets taking place over the coming months.

On Saturday, the French Market will be further expanded as the local plant stalls join with the European stalls.

On Sunday, the monthly Holmfirth Farmers' Market will be open between 8am and 2pm offering local produce including fresh meats, vegetables, beers, cakes and cheeses.

The Spring Bank weekend sees Holmfirth Market Hall open on Monday May 31, offering visitors the chance to buy a selection of hand-made arts and crafts.

Holmfirth's Wednesday Vintage Market is an added attraction throughout the summer, with stalls offering items including jewellery and memorabilia.

For those keen to search out a bargain in Huddersfield, the Bank Holiday Monday Market and Car Boot Sale is taking place between 9am and 3pm at Huddersfield Open Market. To mark the start of half-term week there will also be free balloon modelling and magic for the children.

At Queensgate Market, in Huddersfield, cookery demonstrations taking place on two Wednesdays – May 12 and 26 - and also Saturday May 15, offering recipe ideas and samples.

In Cleckheaton, the farmers market takes place on Saturday June 5 in St Johns Car Park, next to the Town Hall, from 9am until 1pm.

This market has expanded recently with traders selling home-made soups, venison and organic vegetables, as well as locally-produced cakes, savouries, Highland beef, eggs, pickles and chutneys. The monthly farmers markets will be joined on Saturday July 3 with the French Market as part of the town's Folk Festival weekend.

Dewsbury Market is open every Wednesday and Saturday. Dewsbury is the largest open market in Yorkshire, with visitors to the market able to browse more than 320 stalls.
