Fresh challenge for education chief

ONE of Hull's most senior council bosses is leaving.

Nigel Richardson, the council's director of Children and Young People's Services, is leaving for a new job at Leeds City Council, after five years.

Hull is now ranked second bottom in a table of England's 149 education authorities, having climbed up a place from the previous year.

The city's schools had just over a third of pupils achieving five good GCSE passes including English and maths – with only pupils in Knowsley, Merseyside, achieving poorer results.

However, it also ranked as the country's fourth most improved authority for increasing the percentage in pupils achieving five good GCSE passes including English and maths from 29.6 per cent in 2008 to 36.9 per cent in last summer's exams.

In an email, Mr Richardson said: "Hull is now on the map for all the right reasons and it continues to move forward at speed."
