Friends of park fishing for personal memories of lake

A Heritage Lottery-funded project called Love our Lake is underway at Crow Nest Park in Dewsbury which aims to restore the lake to its former glory.

And now the Friends of Crow Nest Park have issued a plea for memories and photos of the lake in time for an exhibition and the creation of an online archive.

Anyone interested is invited to come to a meeting on Tuesday September 10 from 6-7.30pm in the Park.

At 6.30pm Community Archaeologist Kev Cale will display historic photographs already available and outline strategies for collecting further material.

A Friends spokesman said: “The lake has always been a popular subject for postcard photographers since the late 19th century but the Friends are sure many local people also have personal memories and photographs of the lake which could enrich our archive – are you one of them or would you like to help the Friends track them down and record their memories?

“The Friends are sure that there are lots of people with an interest in the former glories of this iconic Dewsbury feature who would like to join in. The aim is to have an interim exhibition in the new year –to mark the completion of the first important stages of cleaning and repairing the lake – and then a final one next summer, combined with a major community celebration of our restored and freshly landscaped lake.”
