Full steam ahead for hats

Pam Bustard, Emily Sue Coates, Laura White and Laura-Beth Coates take to the platform at Grosmont station to model hats by Suzanne Gill Millinery that will feature at the War Weekend at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR). Hat maker Ms Gill, based in Ampleforth, is hunting for heads for her new business by teaming up with the NYMR.

She has produced 40 hats reflecting 1940s designs which will be on sale at the new education centre on Platform Two of Pickering Station from October 15-17 for the railway’s 1940s weekend. The event regularly attracts more than 20,000 visitors. By selling similar headgear worn by those taking parts in re-inactments railway bosses hope not only to further raise the event’s profile but to help establish a local business. Picture: Gerard Binks
