Full steam ahead for railway artist’s latest exhibition

The country’s only full-time professional artist in residence on a heritage railway, Christopher Ware, 52, has been showcasing his latest work at the Storming Ahead exhibition at Pickering station.

While the railway has been shut over the winter, Mr Ware temporarily moved his studio from its permanent home in the stationmaster’s house at Levisham, to the distant island of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides where he spent two months painting storms as they rolled in from the Atlantic.

And this year his annual Spring exhibition at the station features works from this year-long project, along with a new range of railway paintings and prints.

Mr Ware said: “I love painting railways, but I’m also a dedicated landscape and seascape watercolourist. So I wanted to produce pictures describing how we all view upheaval and turbulence.”

The artist, who is a former BBC journalist, has also been staging a simultaneous “virtual” exhibition of the same work.
