Fundraising appeal to restore ‘Cathedral of the Wolds’

IT is known as the “Cathedral of the Wolds” and has dominated the skyline around Bainton since the 14th century.

But now St Andrew’s Church is in need of major repairs to maintain her eminence and parishioners have launched a fundraising appeal to carry them out.

Although temporary repairs to stop water leaking through the roof of the Grade I listed building were carried out last year, a survey has revealed more extensive work costing about £146,000 is needed.

The church has savings of about £82,000 and has been offered an English Heritage grant of £25,000, but when possible VAT savings are factored in it will leave a shortfall of about £30,000.

And with a congregation of only nine, it is clear wider support will be needed.

Church treasurer Liz Dewsbury said: “This is going to clear us out and we don’t get any Government help at all. These are very small communities and a small congregation and I don’t know many who are under 80, so we can’t do it on our own.

“But these are beautiful buildings and it’s a beautiful church. We have sent forms out to everybody in the village and surrounding farms asking if they will support us.”

A fundraising concert will be held at the church on Good Friday, April 6.
