Fundraising widower set for marathon

John Philpott, of Stocksmoor, Huddersfield, was overwhelmed by the generosity of friends, family and colleagues after inviting them to make donations to Yorkshire Cancer Research in memory of his wife Joanne.

The mother of four was diagnosed with terminal brain and lung cancer in June last year. She died in September, aged 50.

In the months preceding her death she kept people up-to-date with her progress on Facebook.

John described her as a "fantastic wife and mother who touched the lives of everyone she met."

Now the independent financial advisor has decided to raise even more for research into the disease by taking part in the 26-mile race.

He will be joined by friends Graham and Wendy Sykes.

John has already raised 9,600 towards his 10,000 target, and is now considering setting his sights even higher.

It will be the third time the 57-year-old has taken part in the event and the second on behalf of Yorkshire Cancer Research, having raised nearly 5,000 in 2004.

John decided to take part in the event in 2004 as a gesture of gratitude after Joanne survived a previous five-year battle

with cervical cancer and was given the all clear.

"We are delighted that he has decided to continue to fundraise for us by taking part in the London Marathon."
