Funds for church to come from bake class

A CHURCH trying to raise £37,000 by the end of March for essential repairs has drafted in an award-winning baker to help raise raise cash.

The prize-winning baker is Mike Armstrong, who is staging his second masterclass in his home village of Haworth whose parish church needs restoration work.

Before Christmas Mr Armstrong showed people how to make stollen cake, and it proved so popular he had to put on two classes.

Now people can learn how to make hot cross buns in time for Easter and, at the same time, help generate much-needed funds to enable the church to put the finishing touches to the first of their three-stage restoration plan which will run over five years.

Reverend Peter Mayo-Smith, priest in charge at St Michael and All Angels, said: “We’re delighted that Mike can help us again - his master classes have proved to be an ideal recipe for our Restoration Fund. And we’re also grateful to Sainsbury’s in Keighley who are providing the ingredients. We’ve faced a number of fund-raising challenges in the last couple of years and so far we’ve succeeded in reaching our targets thanks to the support of our community and generous donors.”

The class will be staged in the Old School Room, Church, Haworth on Monday, March 19, from 7pm.

Tickets are £10 and profits will be donated to the Church Restoration Fund which is currently trying to raise £37,000 by the end of March to ensure that the repairs to the south roof and bell tower can be fully completed.
