Fur ban on ceremonial council robes

CIVIC leaders in York have pledged to ensure ceremonial robes ditch fur trim as they back an animal rights campaign.

The charity, PETA, contacted York Council calling for synthetic fur trim to be used.

The Lord Mayor of York, Coun Julie Gunnell, said her own robe did not have fur trim.

Older ceremonial robes worn by the Sheriff of York and honorary aldermen do, however, have some fur trim.

The Sheriff’s robe is due to be repaired, and synthetic fur will be stitched in place.

The council said future purchases and refurbishment of ceremonial wear will ensure synthetic fur is used, as the authority “fully supports animal rights”.
