A meeting is to be held in Leeds to discuss the future of the city centre.

The Leeds Sustainable Development Group (LSDG) – which wants to improve the city – is inviting everyone interested in the well-being of Leeds to take part in the discussion.

The group says it wants to create a “self sustaining, open and inclusive forum to enable everyone in Leeds to say what sort of place they want to live in, to put forward ideas and to participate in developing proposals and options, at a stage when it can make a difference.”

LSDG’s open workshop will be held at 5.30pm on Monday, September 13, at the Leeds Design Innovation Centre, The Calls.

LSDG contributor and co-ordinator, David Lumb, an architect and director of Architecture 519 in Leeds, said there was “enormous interest” in how Leeds is developed in the future.

Mr Lumb said: “The LSDG recognises that we all need to live in a more sustainable way. The current pause in development provides an opportunity to take a longer term approach to realising mixed-use, environmentally sensitive, socially and culturally varied development.

“However, this will need some innovative thinking about land ownership and use.

“The LSDG website and blog, launched at the beginning of July, has already shown there is enormous interest in how we develop Leeds.

“The city council’s draft planning statement entitled Leeds South Bank, now published for consultation over the next six weeks, provides an excellent opportunity for an open discussion on how we would like to see the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to produce world class sustainable development on the south side of the river.

“The meeting on September 13 is a further opportunity for everyone with an interest in the future development of Leeds to take an active part in the discussion.”

The LSDG is a network of individuals who share a commitment to their city and want to work together to make it better.
