Futurist decision is called in for a rethink by local councillors

Senior councillors agreed earlier this month that officers should discuss the proposals with an undisclosed bidder in greater detail in a move which also paves the way for the demolition of the Futurist.

Members of Scarborough Borough Council’s cabinet committee were told two bids had been received. One, supported in principle by councillors, is a visitor attraction which would feature a rollercoaster and a Space Shot Tower which would propel guests 55 metres into the sky.

At the meeting recommendations proposals should be explored further and details of the demolition were “agreed in principle.” But councillors sought further information about how much money the council would have to pay for the theatre’s demolition under the deal to redevelop it and the surrounding area.

However the decision will be discussed by the council’s Resources Scrutiny Committee today after councillors raised concerns and called the decision in and urged a rethink.

Coun Colin Challen is concerned the undisclosed developer wants the authority to include a parcel of land within St Nicholas Gardens, classified as public open space, in any deal.

“The decision in principle to consider the sale of part of St Nicholas Gardens sets a dangerous precedent for the public open space and in itself would seriously impair the amenity value of these gardens,” he said.

It has also been called in by Coun Janet Jefferson and both call-in applications have been signed by a number of supporters.
