Gale damages pinnacle at York Minster

EMERGENCY repairs have had to be carried out on York Minster's stonework after it was damaged by gales.

A pinnacle on the North West Tower worked loose in high winds last week and officials from the cathedral's works department were forced to seal off Dean's Park, which lies next to the Minister.

It is thought the pinnacle had been flexing for some time, but the high winds accelerated the crumbling of the stonework joints.

The damage was discovered on Thursday last week and Dean's Park was sealed off late that afternoon for safety reasons.

Emergency repairs were completed before the park re-opened the following day, although further work will have to be carried out
