Gallery offering chances for art lovers to find out Moore

ART lovers and anyone keen to find out more about the works of world-famous sculptor Henry Moore are being invited to attend two special events.

Leeds Art Gallery is currently hosting a major exhibition of his works, organised by Tate Britain, London, in collaboration with the gallery, with over 100 works by the Castleford-born artist on display in the city where he studied at Leeds School of Art, now Leeds College of Art.

The exhibition, which is the largest to be held at the Leeds City Council-managed gallery on The Headrow since the British Art Show in 1990, brings together a collection of Moore’s stone sculptures, wood carvings, bronzes and drawings which have never been seen together before in the city.On Sunday from 2pm, Leeds civic architect John Thorp will be giving a talk at the art gallery telling the story of how he worked with Moore on the extension to Leeds Art Gallery which saw the creation of sculpture galleries which opened in 1982.

Moore played a major role in the design of the new galleries, and the talk will see Mr Thorp giving insights into his working relationship with the artist on the project and some of the discussions they had.

This is followed on Sunday, May 15, by a walking outdoor tour around the city looking at public art guided by University of Leeds researcher Rebecca Wade.

The tour will begin at Leeds Art Gallery at 2pm, with the first work to be discussed Moore’s famous Reclining Figure located outside the art gallery entrance, before moving on to other public art to be seen around the city centre.

Both events are free to attend with admission available on the day.

The free exhibition runs until Sunday, June 12.
