Gallery pays affectionate tribute to author of classic children's tales

AN EXHIBITION charting the life and work of one of the UK's most treasured children's authors and illustrators is being staged in North Yorkshire.

Scarborough Art Gallery is hosting the show to celebrate the career of Judith Kerr, 86, who was responsible for a series of classic children's tales including The Tiger Who Came to Tea and the series of books featuring Mog the Cat.

The exhibition will also give visitors the chance to explore Ms Kerr's childhood and her experiences of having to flee Germany as Hitler came to power, before seeking refuge in Switzerland and France and then finally settling in London in 1936.

Her first picture book, The Tiger Who Came to Tea, began as a bedtime story for her own children and was published in 1968.

It soon became a classic and by the time it celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2008, it had been translated into 11 languages and sold more than five million copies.

The Mog series, which began with Mog, the Forgetful Cat in 1970 before drawing to a close with Goodbye Mog in 2002, was created after Ms Kerr sought inspiration from her own family's cat.

The exhibition runs from Saturday until Sunday, September 19.
