Gallery runs out of room as show attracts record entry

A RECORD number of entries have been submitted for one of the region’s biggest open art exhibitions.

The biennial display at The Ropewalk in Barton, called Humber to the Wash, opened at the weekend and selectors had to choose from more than 350 entries.

The exhibition features an array of styles and works with some in 3D, and shows the high degree of talent in the area. Exhibitions officer Richard Hatfield said the pieces which had been left out were not a reflection of their quality but on the size of the gallery.

He said: “This year we received our highest number of submissions and sadly, because of space limitations, a lot of good work has been rejected because physically it is just not possible to fit everything in.”

The difficult task of choosing what to show fell to selectors Hilary Angle of Pocklington and Letitia Thompson from Scunthorpe.

Ms Angle said they had initially been mesmerised by the volume of entries, adding: “But Letitia and I got into our stride and worked our way through every entry giving a thorough vetting to each one.

“It’s a really hard task and mostly we agreed on what to keep and what not to, bearing in mind the ultimate aim was a cohesive but varied show.”
