Gallery’s exhibition space 
raised to whole new level

A newly-completed mezzanine floor, which forms part of the venue’s £8m extension, has been unveiled in the gallery’s Victorian roof space.

When the project is finished, the new level will play host to the gallery’s centre of ceramic art, showcasing its world-class collection to visitors.

Dr Janet Barnes, the chief executive of York Museums Trust, said: “When I first saw this fantastic Victorian roof space I was certain that it had to be a key part of any major development we undertook at the gallery.

“For decades it has been hidden away but with the mezzanine now finished you can see the potential the space has and how it will become a superb home for star works from our ceramic collections.”

Construction of the mezzanine floor will help the gallery to create an additional 60 per cent of exhibition space within the original footprint of the building. The project also includes extra learning space, an artists’ garden and a second entrance.

The gallery remains closed while the renovations, which are due for completion next year, are carried out.
