Gang jailed for 20 years for reign of terror across Yorkshire estate

A GANG who terrorised a Yorkshire estate and committed a string of robberies against residents have been jailed for a combined 20 years.

The group of five men were sentenced yesterday at Leeds Crown Court for robbery, violence and drug offences on the London Park Estate, Mirfield.

The court heard one flat on Eastway Park was targeted several times by the gang, with three people robbed while inside it in January this year.

Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Adrian Lever of Dewsbury CID who led the investigation, said: “This group believed that they ran the London Park estate, that they were untouchable and could commit crimes against people living on the estate as and when they pleased.

“However, the sentences they have received today clearly show that no-one is above the law.

“We are pleased with the result.”

Nathan McCarthy, 25, of no fixed abode, was jailed for six years for robbery and six months for drugs offences, while Jamie Evans, 20, of Mitchell Avenue, Huddersfield, received three-and-a-half years for robbery.

Jordan Watkinson, 19, of Bankfield Court, Mirfield, received three years for attempted robbery and two for affray, with Liam McCarthy, 23, of Oliver Gardens, Mirfield, receiving three year and one year for the same offences.

Bryan Laffey, 16, of Orlando Close, London Park, Mirfield, was sentenced for six months for attempted robbery and one year for robbery.

All five were found guilty after a trial held in July.
