Gangster rap, country music and Rolf Harris... it has to be Glastonbury

FROM country music to gangster rap, this year's Glastonbury celebrations began in full force yesterday as more than 100,000 festival-goers descended on the Somerset site.

The festival, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, got properly under way with acts from all over the world performing.

Acts on the main Pyramid Stage included country veteran Willie Nelson, infamous gangster-rapper Snoop Dogg and TV presenter Rolf Harris.

Snoop Dogg's set in particular drew a vast crowd with people scaling a 20ft wooden sculpture to get a better view. Among those enjoying it was 18-year-old Thea Williams from Leeds, who said: "I loved it. He is a legend."

Rolf Harris, who recently turned 80, also proved a big hit – prompting mass sing alongs with his version of Two Little Boys and a cover of Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven.

The festival will be headlined by cartoon-band Gorillaz – who were drafted in as last-minute replacements for Irish rockers U2 after their frontman Bono had to undergo back surgery.

Gorillaz are the brainchild of Damon Albarn who headlined last year with his band Blur.

Also expected to appear today is Australian pop star Kylie Minogue – who was forced to pull out five years ago when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
