Garden, abbey and war centre are praised by ‘silver tourists’ guide

The RHS gardens at Harlow Carr, Harrogate; Fountains Abbey, near Ripon; and Eden Camp, near Malton, have all won praise for accommodating older or less able guests by the website for mature travellers Silver Travel Advisor, which said they were struck by the “consideration and detail” shown by Yorkshire tourist attractions.

Silver Travel Advisor member Eleanor Wasley, from Scunthorpe, visited all the attractions on behalf of the website, which also recommends Brodsworth Hall, near Doncaster, Ferens Art Gallery in Hull and York’s National Railway Museum. Also recommended are Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, indelibly associated with the 1970s film The Railway Children, Ampleforth Abbey and Beverley Minster.

Mrs Wasley said: “I was struck by the effort made by so many of Yorkshire’s tourist attractions to cater for people with reduced mobility or age-related limitations and how customer oriented and friendly they are.“

Harlow Carr was cited for its disabled parking, availability of electric and manual mobility scooters, disabled toilets, induction loops and free entry for companions of wheelchair users and visually-impaired visitors.

Fountains Abbey offers battery-operated cars and wheelchairs, has disabled toilets and a minibus to carry people between admission points.

Eden Camp is on one level. Wheelchairs are available as are Braille sheets and audio guides. However, it was often worth a call, said Mrs Wasley, before a visit, especially for those wanting to book wheelchairs.
