Georgian elegance brought to life

Hannah Phillips, the director at Fairfax House in York, helps to prepare an exhibition in which the elegance of the Georgian era will be brought to life in the present.

The Dress to Impress event at Fairfax House is the first of its kind in York and reveals the sumptuous fabrics, skilled craftsmanship and elegantly embroidered detail of costumes dating between 1730 and 1780.

Dress typically worn by the upper echelons of society will be showcased, and documentary evidence has been used to reveal the clothing of the original inhabitants of Fairfax House, Viscount Fairfax and his family, during the 1760s.

The Dress to Impress exhibition runs from next Saturday until November 21.
