Georgian England brought back to life at historic abbey

THE splendour of Georgian England is being recreated at one of Yorkshire’s historic abbeys.

The Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal estate in North Yorkshire is hosting a special event highlighting the best of the 18th century with music, dancing and entertainment.

Garden follies are being opened up to give visitors a rare chance to explore hidden parts of the estate, while yesterday saw the History Wardrobe bring the Banqueting House to life with presentations on fashion and social etiquette.

This afternoon, visitors can watch and join in with the Bradford-based Arbeau Dancers outside the Temple of Piety, while ensemble Arioso will present Music for the Georgian Pleasure Garden in the Banqueting House at 1.15 and 3pm.

In the Water Garden, meanwhile, craft workshops will give children the chance to create their own Georgian-style feathered and glittery masks, perfect for a 19th century ball.

The Water Garden at Studley Royal forms a perfect backdrop for the event, impressing and delighting visitors as it would have following its creation between 1716 and 1781.

It was the work of John and William Aislabie, featuring carefully-designed vistas and surprise views for guests as they toured the garden.
