(Read more about John Carr)Built in 1755, Arthington Park, near Otley, is a handsome Grade 11-listed family home with a separate cottage. It is set in private grounds with an orangery, a stunning walled garden and a grass tennis court.

Arthington Park was originally the stable block for nearby Arthington Hall, and was built in 1755 by Carr, who worked extensively in Yorkshire and built several grand stable blocks into his country house projects. The accommodation for the horses was at ground level with staff accommodation on the floor above. During the Second World War, when the Hall was used as a convalescent hospital, the stable block was divided into two cottages.

New life for Georgian buildingThe present owners bought the stable block, cottages and grounds in 1994 and converted the two cottages into a single house. In order to keep the building work as authentic as possible, they consulted the John Carr specialist Dr Ivan Hall for information about Carr’s building methods and design details. The result is a house which both honours the memory of Carr and is a comfortable family home.Approached through parkland, the property has a woodland walk and walled gardens and there are a range of outbuildings at the rear of the house, which were used for agricultural purposes when the property was a home farm. There is also an orangery, which provides entertaining space, a grass tennis court and separate cottage with the whole property extending to just over five acres.

Expert viewEstate agent Daniel Rigg, partner with Knight Frank in Harrogate, says: “Arthington Park is a very special property indeed, the like of which very rarely comes on to the market. It is a very elegant Georgian house, with beautifully proportioned and light Georgian rooms – as you would expect – but it is also a comfortable, friendly family home. That is an unusual and fabulous mixture.“The setting is Lower Wharfedale idyllic. Arthington boasts panoramic views.”*For details contact Knight Frank, tel: 01423 535373; [email protected]
