Getting to the heart of stone

Working stone may seem straightforward, but the complexities are now being revealed as the results of a three-year research project by Edinburgh College of Art go on show in Yorkshire. Photographs, films and stone objects themselves are being displayed at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park at West Bretton, near Huddersfield, revealing some of the traditions of carving and working stone.

Among them is a piece by Gerard Mas, called Practices of Neoplantonic Sheep Shearing created from Portland Limestone, and being admired by stone technician Dick Ellis, above.
