Giant choir on the lookout for 200 members ready to sing out for freedom

PEOPLE who sing from the same hymn-sheet are needed for Hull Freedom Chorus, the biggest ever massed choir to sing in the city.

Hull Council’s City Arts Unit is organising the choir which needs up to 200 people.

Chorus members don’t have to be professionals or be able to read music – and they won’t have to audition.

They only need enjoy singing, want to meet new people and be prepared to appear at Hull City Hall on Thursday September 1, as well as at the Freedom Festival, probably in the Fruit Market area, on Saturday September 3.

There will be rehearsals in June and July, culminating in a dress rehearsal on August 31.

As well as rehearsals under the expert direction of Em Whitfield Brooks, there will be versions of the songs published on-line to help choir members learn the words and music.

The Chorus will be singing a variety of songs written by composers ranging from Beethoven to Queen and drawn from many different genres, all of which relate to Freedom.

The city’s arts development officer Clare Drury urged people to join in, saying: “A massed choir is a great way for people from all walks of life to get involved with arts and culture in the city.

“Singing in harmony with a large group of people is a really uplifting experience.”

Anyone over 14 can join, however those aged 14 to 18 need their parents’ permission.
