Giant greyhound takes slice of the Steel City on UK tour

Now “Bunny”, believed to be the world’s biggest dog, is turning heads on a 2,500-mile tour of the UK which takes in a total of 25 greyhound tracks.

The huge sculpture, which is positinoed leaping across a stretch limousine, weighs just less than three tonnes and is rougly 50 times the size of a “normal” greyhound.

John Gilburn, managing director of Owlerton Greyhound Stadium in Sheffield, said: “We were delighted to be hosting Bunny during the Sheffield leg of the 40-day UK tour.

“She certainly caused a stir and turned heads, becoming quite the celebrity, judging from the number of camera flashes we had as we drove by.

“It was amazing watching the reactions on people’s faces when they saw a 24ft greyhound sail by.”

The aim of the tour is to publicise greyhound racing, and Bunny will visit more than 30 cities across the country before the end of November.

The sculpture’s status as the world’s biggest dog is currently still pending with those behind the Guinness Book of Records.

During its tour, the sculpture toured around Steel City sights including Hillsborough football ground, Owlerton Greyhound Stadium, West Street, the Meadowhall shopping centre, Bramall Lane, Ecclesall Road and the Peace Gardens.

Bunny is named after after the greyhound “Showme Thebunny” adopted by Colin Murray, whose races are broadcast live from Owlerton Greyhound Stadium.
