Giant man event linked to Jubilee

AN annual event celebrating the life of England’s tallest man has raised more than £2,500 for charity.

Giant Bradley Day attracted thousands of visitors to Market Weighton, the birthplace of William Bradley, who was 7ft 9in tall when he died in 1820.

The organising committee will hold a presentation evening tonight at Bradley’s Restaurant in High Street, when cheques of £840 each will be given to Market Weighton Football Club and Vixen 101 Community Radio, with cheques of £450 each going to St John’s Methodist Church and Market Weighton Scout and Guide HQ.

The committee is inviting residents and local businesses to a meeting at the community centre from 7.30pm on October 13 when it will discuss plans to link next year’s event to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Committee chairman Andy Swalwell said: “We want to take the opportunity of the Queen’s Jubilee to put on a one-day festival for Market Weighton. However, we cannot do this ourselves and we will need the support of the town council and many other local organisations to make this happen.”
