'Ginger nuts' fail to paint the town red

Morley market trader Robyn Lawrence joins in the fun of the Great British Redhead Festival with market manager David Wilson.

But people who attended the festival, held in the West Yorkshire town, last night complained that too many non-redheads turned up. Organisers were hoping to attract hundreds of 'ginger nuts' but some were disappointed with the turn-out.

About 1,000 people turned up, but only about 150 were redheads. Some redheads who tried to get to Saturday's event turned back after getting caught up in traffic on the M62. One of those who attended, Jacquie Parry, complained a photocall for redheads contained "a load of random folk and non-redhead kids". Another, Adele Wainwright, said: "I only saw a handful of redheads."

Organiser Richard Simpson said next year's event would be held on a Sunday to ensure more people could attend. Picture: Graham Lindley
