Girl dies after collapsing in shower at home

A TEENAGE girl died after being rushed to hospital in a high-speed mission after apparently collapsing in the shower at her home in Doncaster.

Roads between Amy Kirkby’s home in Sprotbrough and Doncaster Royal Infirmary were blocked off by police, as a police officer drove the ambulance to hospital while paramedics fought in the back of the vehicle to revive the 15-year-old.

Doctors took over upon her arrival at hospital, but the battle to save Amy’s life ended at 5.30pm last Friday, 75 minutes after the incident in the bathroom. A post-mortem examination to establish the cause of the schoolgirl’s death was carried out yesterday.

The results are expected to be released today.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said yesterday: “Police are investigating the sudden death of a 15-year-old girl in the Doncaster area on Friday, September 2.

“Officers were called to an address in Sprotbrough at around 4.15pm and the girl was pronounced dead at 5.30pm.

“The police investigation is in its early stages, but officers do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances surrounding the girl’s death.”

After the emergency services were called on Friday afternoon, ambulances and police cars raced to the address and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance was also scrambled.

It was decided that the quickest way to transport the teenager to hospital would be to clear other traffic from the roads rather than use the helicopter, which cannot land at the hospital itself.

Police then closed Town End roundabout, the old North Bridge, Church Way, East Laith Gate and Thorne Road so the emergency convoy could get to hospital as quickly as possible.

Amy was due to start Year 11 at Ridgewood School in Scawsby yesterday.

Headteacher Chris Hoyle, spoke about the schoolgirl’s death to pupils in assemblies on the first day of the academic year.

Another friend said: “RIP my beautiful best friend, my heart is aching.”
