Glass safety campaigners take petition to Downing Street

POLICE officers from the region will join campaigners to deliver a petition to Number 10 Downing Street today as part of a call for shatterproof glasses to be used in clubs and pubs around the country.

A campaign spearheaded by Marjorie Golding and Jane Sherriff has attracted115,000 names so far – 15,000 more than needed to initiate a debate in Parliament.

Mrs Golding, from Milton Keynes, who started the petition after her son was a victim of a glass attack, joined forces with Mrs Sheriff, from Lancashire, after her husband was killed at a pop concert after being struck with a glass bottle.

Inspector Chris Shepherdson and Detective Constable Shane Jackson from Humberside Police were asked to go with them to deliver the petition to Home Office Minister Jeremy Browne.

In 2007, officers from the force, together with medics, began a high-profile campaign to persuade city centre nightspots to use shatterproof glasses to try to reduce glassing attacks, which led to more than 100 businesses replacing their standard glasses.

The number of recorded crimes where bottles have been used as weapons has nearly halved from 121 six years ago to 66 in the past year.

Insp Shepherdson said: “This is a fantastic milestone for the next chapter of the project, and I hope that everyone’s hard work, dedication and vision, will be recognised by the Home Office.”
