Gliding competition takes to the air

SIX decades of gliding history will be in the air at the same time as an East Yorkshire club celebrates its 25th anniversary.

More than 100 glider pilots and their crews will be arriving at the Wolds Gliding Club on Saturday August 21 as it hosts its annual two-seat gliding competition at its home at Pocklington Airfield.

The official opening ceremony takes place the following morning, the competition being set to continue until August 29.

Between 30 and 40 gliders will take to the skies daily and compete against each other over set routes of up to 300km, taking four or five hours to complete.

Competition director John Norman said: "What makes our competition unique is that it allows the oldest classic aircraft to compete, through our unique handicap system, with ultra-modern craft built from glass and carbon fibre."

Funds raised will go towards the Sue Ryder Care Organisation this year.
