Go-ahead for energy-efficient homes in regeneration village

A DEVELOPMENT of highly energy efficient homes is to be built as a result of a collaboration between Barnsley Council and the South Yorkshire Housing Association.

The 10 homes will be constructed by the association at Bramah Street, Carlton, after winning planning approval.

Barnsley Council's Green Corridor team worked with the association on designing the houses, in a modern style which is in keeping with the surrounding village.

Coun Bill Newman, council spokesman for development, said: "This newly approved housing development for Bramah Street will be an important addition to the area, providing high quality attractive housing for families to rent or buy a stake in and is another example of Barnsley Council's successful partnership working during these difficult economic times.

"These new houses will complement the regeneration works that have been undertaken in Carlton village by Barnsley Council's Green Corridor Programme and the hope is that these works will keep Carlton attractive and sustainable for the long term future."

The development replaces dated terraced houses which were costly to maintain. These properties were demolished following the successful re-housing of the residents by Barnsley Council.

The new homes will be constructed in an arc design, which is aimed at giving the street a more open feel, and there will be more trees planted, with improvements to footpaths also taking place.

No start date for the building work has been fixed, but it is expected to commence before the end of the year.

The new houses are the latest step in a programme of regeneration in Carlton village that has involved a range of housing improvements.
