Go-ahead given to new £9m Sir Robert Ogden cancer unit

HARROGATE District Hospital’s new multi-million pound cancer unit has been given the go-ahead and will be named after the Yorkshire philanthropist who has pledged £3.5m towards the vital new addition.

The plans for the £9m Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Cancer Unit, named after the leading racehorse owner who was knighted for his services to charity in Yorkshire, have been rubber-stamped by councillors on a Harrogate BoroughCouncil planning committee this week.

Now it is hoped the oncology unit will be up and running by summer 2013.

Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust (HDFT) chief executive Richard Ord said: “We are delighted with the decision.

“We can now press ahead with our plans for a multi-million pound new state-of-the-art cancer unit for the benefit of cancer patients in Harrogate and the surrounding district. We are very grateful for the patience of our patients, visitors, neighbours and staff as we go about this major project to make cancer services in Harrogate world class.”

Plans for an extension to the hospital’s existing car park to make up for a projected shortfall in 150 spaces were also approved.

It is being funded with £3.5m from Sir Robert, £2m from the HDFT and £3.5m from Macmillan Cancer Support.
