Go-ahead for pit site homes project

PLANNING permission has been granted for a massive new development of almost 1,000 new homes, along with shops and industrial units, on the former Harworth Colliery site, near Doncaster.

Harworth Estates, the property arm of mining company UK Coal, has pledged to "work with the community" to ensure that the scheme helps to "re-energise" the former pit town.

Bassetlaw District Council has given its consent to the scheme, which involves the homes, 825,000 sq ft of industrial and warehouse space and a large store.

Tim Love, development director of Harworth Estates, said: "The council's approval of our proposals follows positive discussions with a significant number of organisations and the existing local community to establish their needs and aspirations.

"We are very encouraged by the support we have received.

"The dialogue we have had over the past year or so as the project has developed will continue as we begin to deliver sustainable developments from a project that will be a major boost for the Harworth community and surrounding areas during the construction phase and beyond."
