Go-ahead for £275m Bradford Westfield shops complex

COUNCILLORS have approved plans for the long-delayed Broadway shopping centre in Bradford.

Plans for the £275m complex were given the go-ahead yesterday by the Regulatory and Appeals Committee.

The development is for 75 shops, with space for cafes, restaurants and car parking.

Work is going on behind the scenes to get retailers to take space in the centre.

A council spokesman said: “Westfield is progressing with pre-lets and having planning permission for the revised scheme in place will aid that work.

“The Broadway site is a key regeneration project in the district and we are continuing to support Westfield in their work to attract tenants to the scheme.”

A spokesman for the developer said: “This positive step underlines the commitment and vision of the council for regeneration in the city. The grant of planning permission also provides a further layer of confidence for retailers interested in taking a space in the scheme. We continue to work with retailers to help bring this scheme to fruition.”

In Halifax, plans for a new £25m shopping centre have been submitted to Calderdale Council. They would see Pennine Shopping Centre, on Horton Street, demolished and rebuilt.
