Go-ahead for pumping station work

Yorkshire Water has announced that work is to begin at Scarborough's Scalby Mills pumping station, above, in mid-October as part of the company's £7.6m investment in sewage treatment in the resort.

As reported by the Yorkshire Post, residents living near a sewage farm, who say they have been plagued by bad smells for two years, have won their fight for improvements after Scarborough businessman Don Robinson led a campaign. Andy Taylor, treatment manager at Yorkshire Water, said: “We’re now happy to be in the position where we can make the necessary improvements to the pumping station which we hope will go a long way towards reducing any odours.”
