Go-ahead for speed limit changes

SPEED limits on two of the busiest roads in Barnsley are set to be lowered, despite opposition from motorists.

Objections to proposals for the reduced speed limit on the A628 Dodworth Road between Broadway and the motorway roundabout, and against a new 40mph limit on the A635 Barugh Green Road, were considered by councillors and overruled at a cabinet meeting yesterday.

The cabinet spokesman for development, environment and culture at Barnsley Council, Coun Roy Miller, said: “While the journey times of some motorists may be affected, it is necessary to improve respect for the posted speed limits, to encourage self-compliance and to help continue to reduce casualties and the number of speed-related collisions.”

A traffic regulation order will now be made to reduce the speed limit on the A628 Dodworth Road from 40mph to 30mph.

On the A635 Barugh Green Road, meanwhile, the limit will be reduced from the national speed limit to 40mph.

Meanwhile, the speed limit will change from 30mph to 40mph on the B6100 Hunningley Lane. No objections were received in relation to this new 40mph limit.
