Go-ahead urged for eco-lodges project

PLANS for a new eco-lodge holiday development on the East Coast are being recommended for approval – despite running into opposition.

RL Kirkwood and Sons want to demolish existing farm buildings at Low Bonwick Farm, Skipsea Road, Bewholme, just under a mile away from the sprawling Far Grange leisure complex.

Concerns have been raised about the amount of traffic going down the single track road to the site, which is often used by walkers and cyclists and part of the National Cycleway.

Bewholme Parish Council objects, as do several local residents, who say there are already too many holiday cabins in the area and that people would be reliant on cars to travel – a factor often cited to stop other developments going ahead.

Parish council chairman David White said they were concerned about the "totally inadequate road" and the "inadequate" water supply.

Planners acknowledge the impact that larger scale parks have had on the East Riding's coastline, but claim the scheme, with a comprehensive scheme of new planting, will, in time, blend in.

Conditions will be put on the planning permission so that passing places are provided between the site and the B1249 at Skipsea Brough.

A survey had shown that a barn owl was living in one of the farm buildings due to be demolished. It burned down in July.

The owner has agreed to conditions including putting up a roost and nesting box and undertaking a survey.

The buildings would be fitted with wood burners and heated by ground source heat pumps, with eco-friendly sedum or turf roofs. The plans are recommended for approval at tomorrow's meeting at County Hall, Beverley.
