Goalkeeper collapses and dies on pitch

A FOOTBALL player collapsed and died as he warmed up for a weekend match.

Chris Ogden, 29, was due to start in goal on Saturday afternoon for AFC Crossleys in an away fixture against Denholme United at Mason Green, Illingworth, Halifax.

After he collapsed team-mates fought to save his life with assistant manager Scott Griffiths giving him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

When paramedics arrived he was taken by ambulance to Calderdale Royal Hospital.

Despite medical staff spending 20 minutes trying to resuscitate Mr Ogden their efforts were unsuccessful and he died shortly afterwards.

Club secretary Mick Gavan said it was a heart-rending day for the club.
