Goats, bees, and herbs are all part of Good Life

SELF-SUFFICIENCY is being celebrated with a Good Life weekend at a North Lincolnshire visitor attraction.

Organisers say the event at Waters' Edge Visitor Centre at Barton-upon-Humber on this Saturday and Sunday is a must for anyone who has ever dreamt of ditching the rat race to rear their own animals and grow their own food – just like Tom and Barbara in the classic 1970s Good Life television comedy.

Sheep dog demonstrations, feeding baby goats, beekeeping, organic gardening, wool spinning and herb growing are just a few of the activities on show.

Experts in everything from herbs to composting and water conservation to setting up a smallholding will be on hand to give advice.

People can also find out about producing their own energy, using wind turbines, solar heating and wood burning stoves. There will also be a marquee with information stalls and sales of natural cosmetics, goats cheese and more.

North Lincolnshire Council Leader Councillor Mark Kirk said: "The Good Life Weekend is a must for anyone interested in self-sufficiency – even if it's just planting a few carrots in the back yard.

"It's one of the biggest events ever staged at Waters' Edge with attractions ranging from feeding lambs and milking goats to beekeeping and organic gardening.

"Waters' Edge is a fitting venue as the Visitor Centre is one of the greenest buildings in North Lincolnshire."

Set between the mighty Humber and a hinterland of ponds dug out of a heavily contaminated site, the centre, which opened four years ago, has impeccable green credentials. Solar panels provide electricity and rainwater is harvested and used for the ladies toilets and a willow-burning boiler kicks into action in the winter.
