Going for gold

DAVID Cameron says Britain is “on track” to secure a lasting legacy from the 2012 Olympics. He may believe this, but taxpayers and sports enthusiasts here in Yorkshire are not ready to hang a gold medal around the Prime Minister’s neck.

The Government bullishly announced ahead of a special Cabinet meeting at the Olympic Park that the long-term future of the permanent sporting venues had been secured, even though the main athletics stadium is still mired in uncertainty.

And, when it comes to any health dividend from the Games, Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt should be taken to task. He says measures will be announced to open up school facilities such as swimming pools, sports halls and pitches to the community.

This already happens. What is required is funding so such venues can open free of charge this summer to enable youngsters inspired by great sporting deeds to follow their dreams. It is called seizing the moment – and the means must be provided so all those without London 2012 tickets can bask in any feelgood factor which might radiate from the capital to the provinces.
