Golden opportunity for schoolchildren

Deputy head verger David Clark takes a look at the Sheffield Children's Festival work of art A Flock of Golden Starlings in Sheffield Cathedral.

More than 1,000 schoolchildren helped to create the spectacle in which a flock of golden starlings are seen flying through the nave. Since February, children aged seven to 13 in schools across the city have worked with professional sculptors making tiny golden starlings from the modelling plastic polymorph. One of the birds has also been cast in real gold by the Sheffield Assay Office, and youngsters visiting the installation are being encouraged to try to spot which is made of precious metal. Artists involved in the project are part of the Sheffield Arts in the Park group. Project manager Luisa Golob said: "This has been such an exciting project for us."
