Golf champion honoured by home council

CHAMPION golfer Lee Westwood was made an honorary freeman of his home district yesterday – the first to be given the honour in almost 40 years.

Westwood, 38, was born and brought up in Worksop and members of the local Bassetlaw District Council voted to make him a freeman at a meeting last month.

The Ryder Cup winner, who is currently number three in the world rankings, said it was a “nice recognition” and was joined for the ceremony by his father John and mother Trish.

Councillors said the golfer was a credit to the area and was still involved in youth and community groups.

A council spokesman said the authority was delighted to make Westwood an honorary freeman and added: “This is the first time the title has been bestowed upon a Bassetlaw citizen since Bassetlaw District Council was created in 1974.”
