Golf project refusal cheers residents

Residents have welcomed the decision to refuse planning permission for a golf driving range which they feared would shatter the tranquility of a quiet corner of East Yorkshire.

Developers Derwent Holdings Ltd wanted to build a single-storey building for the range with associated parking and landscaping on two fields south of the former De La Pole Hospital.

In spite of being sandwiched between Willerby and Cottingham, the area is quiet and agricultural in nature and the range would have been next door to Haltemprice Crematorium.

The decision was refused by East Riding Council planners.

A resident said: "We are delighted. This is the second time they have tried to get permission. No doubt there will be a third time and we will do the same."

Developers had previously applied for a two-storey building housing 40 bays and space for 60 cars. This was refused by East Riding Council in February 2007.
