Gong for Carey Mulligan

Carey Mulligan was last night named leading actress at the and Orange British Academy Film Awards for her role in coming-of-age film An Education.

Colin Firth landed the leading actor award for his portrayal of a gay academic battling grief in A Single Man.

British newcomer Mulligan, 24, dyed her brunette hair blonde and made a glamorous red carpet entrance for the Covent Garden ceremony in a floor-length monochrome floral dress.

The Hurt Locker swept to success with a best director and best film double.

Kathryn Bigelow won the best director gong for her role in the Iraq war drama, triumphing over blockbuster Avatar. The award was presented by Dustin Hoffman.
