Goodbye Micra, hello Juke

Production line worker Lee Stephenson helps to assemble one of the last Nissan Micra models at the car giant's plant in Sunderland, as production stops after 18 years.

The final Micra to be produced in Sunderland rolled off the production line yesterday. Manufacturing of the Micra will switch to India as Sunderland concentrates on other models, such as the new crossover Juke, Note, Qashqai and Qashqai+2.

Production supervisor Keith Watson, who worked on the first Micra produced in Sunderland, said: "It's sad to see Micra production end in Sunderland but we have a fantastic product replacing it in the Juke." Sunderland has manufactured 2,368,704 Micras since 1992, which is more than 40 per cent of all cars built at the plant since Nissan began production there in 1986.

Production of the Juke starts on the old Micra production line in mid-August.
