Cookies are small files left on a user’s computer as they visit websites.

The files are designed to save data, such as remembering login details, or to track a user’s internet behaviour and target them with advertisements.

The law surrounding cookies was tightened across Europe in May last year. Websites must now tell visitors how they use cookies and get permission for their use. The European Commission has been pursuing online firms to give consumers more control over internet tracking.
