Graduate creates artwork for university

Anna Gammans, who graduated with a 2:1 in History this summer, has created the piece of art for the institution’s history department to mark its 50th anniversary.

Miss Gammans, 21, said: “From start to finish this project has been hugely exciting for me as both an artist and a University of York graduate. I was thrilled to be asked to showcase my work in a department and university which has supported me, and shared my experiences, for three wonderful years. I completely immersed myself in the painting and I hope that it is a reflection not only of the vibrancy of York as a city, but of my passion and personality too.

“Artistic inspiration is never hard to find in York, the stunning architecture of the city is bursting with its own unique history and culture - something which always complemented my studies in History. Bridging the gap between art and history, between knowledge and its representation, is what this piece represents publicly. For me personally, it also reconciles my two passions.”

Studying history while running a small art business Miss Gammans aimed to create an artwork reflecting York’s beauty and vibrancy. The artist will hand over the piece on Wednesday.
