Mr Ali, who is thought to be Somalian, lived in Headford Grove in the Broomhall area of Sheffield, which is within a short walking distance of the Sharrow neighbourhood, where he was killed.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said: “The man who died as a result of the incident in Crowther Place, Sheffield, on Friday has been named as Mubarak Ahmed Ali, aged 24.

“Mubarak died from stab wounds to the chest.

“Police continue to examine the scene and are following a number of lines of enquiry.”

Witnesses said that Mr Ali was stabbed after a fight near the front of Mount Pleasant Park, just yards from Sharrow Primary School.

Christian pastor Luc Zintchem said: “Some young people were having a fight and one of them used a knife on the other. They were Somalian people.

“It’s so dangerous – people from the same community fighting with each other. It’s mad.”

Parents with children at Sharrow Primary were informed on Friday afternoon that an “incident” had taken place and were advised to collect their children on foot, rather than by car, due to traffic in the area.

Police then put cordons in place, closing off an area including both the busy Abbeydale Road and part of Mount Pleasant Park, as investigations were launched into the fatal stabbing.

Supply teacher David Brown, 29, of Fieldhead Road, lives close to the scene of the killing.

He said: “I’ve not heard of any violent crime round here before.

“I don’t consider it a bad area or a rough area. Maybe in some places you could have gang difficulties but there are no problems like that around here.”
