Graffiti yobs strike at heritage railway bridge

Vandals have struck at one of Yorkshire's heritage railways.

A bridge, which is part of the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway in West Yorkshire's Bront Country, was covered in graffiti.

The crew of a train from Oxenhope to Keighley discovered the vandalism to the railway's Bridge 4, which spans Park Lane in Keighley, on June 19. A nearby platelayers' cabin had also been defaced.

Volunteer and signal engineer Bruce MacDougall said: "This was a serious incident. Chemicals in the paint used by some graffiti criminals cause burns requiring hospital treatment and the substances used to clean graffiti off surfaces such as the metalwork of bridges and bricks on buildings are themselves harmful and have to be handled with the utmost care."
